Texas Gov. Gregg Abbott and the U.S. Marshal have announced that Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia was found dead in his luxury hotel room this morning after he failed to join his friends for breakfast. He had been on a quail hunting trip in Marfa, Texas.
“Judge Antonin Scalia was a man of God, a patriot and an unwavering defender of the written Constitution,” said Gov. Abbott. “He was the solid rock who turned away so many attempts to depart from and distort the constitution.”
Justice Scalia, appointed to the Supreme Court in 1986 by President Ronald Reagan was the first Italian-American Supreme Court Justice. At the time of his death he was the longest serving justice on the court. He became famous for his withering and feisty dissents.
He dissented from the majority decision when the court guaranteed a right to same-sex marriage last year.
