Virgil Francis Courtney, 79, died of heart failure Jan. 20 in Henderson, Nevada. There was a service at the First Church of the Nazarene in Salem. Msgr. Tim Murphy will offer a special Mass at 9 a.m. Wednesday, March 22, in Mr. Courtney’s honor at the Central Catholic High School chapel.

Mr. Courtney was born June 23, 1937, the oldest of nine children in Portland. He was baptized at Holy Redeemer Parish, where he attended grade school, then graduating from Central Catholic High School in  

1956, where he was a classmate of Msgr. Murphy.

He married Lucy Kurkoski at St. Rose of Lima Church, and the couple  sent their children to St. Rose School and to Central Catholic. One son completed his Catholic education at the University of Portland.

Mr. Courtney was an active parishioner at St. Rose, serving as a reader at Mass. Mr. and Mrs. Courtney later divorced.

Mr. Courtney moved to Henderson after retiring.

He was preceded in death by his son, Mark Courtney.

He is survived by his children Stephen Courtney, Matt Courtney, Brenda Courtney Stageberg and Andrew Courtney; and by his stepchildren Paul Entler, James Entler and Robert Entler.

He had eight grandchildren: Allison Courtney, Erik Courtney, Julia Courtney, Taylor Stageberg, Nathan Stageberg, Sasha Courtney, Hanna Courtney and Lucas Entler.
