CUERNAVACA, Morelos, Mexico — Benedictine Konrad Schaefer has been elected as the first prior of Mount Angel Abbey’s daughterhouse here.
Monasterio Benedictino Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles held the election under the supervision of the abbot of Mount Angel Abbey, Benedictine Abbot Jeremy Driscoll. Typically, elections for abbot and prior of a monastery are supervised by the abbot-president of the Swiss-American Benedictine Congregation, but it is a custom that the first election of a newly independent monastery be conducted by the abbot of the latter’s motherhouse.
Father Konrad, a native of Marquam, made his first vows at Mount Angel Abbey and was ordained to the priesthood. In the late 1990s he was sent to Cuernavaca. Father Konrad teaches Scripture at the Pontifical University in Mexico City and has published numerous articles. His election as prior comes at an exciting time in the monastery’s history, as the community recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of its foundation.
