How to measure?

A Muslim woman adorned in an American flag listens as President Donald Trump delivers his first address to a joint session of Congress Feb. 28 in Washington.
Our new president has issued executive orders that seem to target undocumented immigrants and the freedom of movement of our Muslim brothers and sisters, actions that have already caused significant pain, disruption and anxiety for them and their families.
The readings at Mass on the Sunday just after the order called us in a distinctly different direction. Zephaniah exhorts us to seek justice and humility. Paul in his first letter to the Corinthians has God choosing the lowly and the despised of the world. The Psalmist has the Lord raising up those who are bowed down and protecting strangers.
All these messages are mirrored and amplified in Matthew’s Gospel message of the Beatitudes. Pope Francis has offered the president his good wishes and prayers. Let us join with the Holy Father in praying that, under the president’s leadership, “May America’s stature continue to be measured above all by its concern for the poor, the outcast and those in need.”
