MEDFORD — In 2009, Dennis Macey found himself in a hospital bed reading his church’s bulletin. It was in this moment that the Medford firefighter began pondering if he should pursue a path toward the diaconate. He came across a note in the bulletin about a nearby informational session on the permanent deacon vocation.

“God put me there in that moment to slow down enough to give it some serious thought,” he says.

And he did. After eight years, during which Macey obtained a master’s degree in theology with a concentration in sacred Scripture and traveled to Portland monthly for diaconate classes, he was called to candidacy in a March 18 ceremony with Archbishop Alexander Sample at Sacred Heart Parish here.

Macey, who has been an active Catholic his entire life, always loved the Catholic Church, the faith and the treasury that’s been handed down to him.

As the only member of his diaconate class, Macey will be ordained Oct. 21 at Sacred Heart.
