Father Donald McHugh

Father Donald McHugh, 86, died peacefully Nov. 12. There will be a rosary at 9:30 a.m. and a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, at St. Mary Cathedral in Portland. Interment will take place following the reception at Willamette National Cemetery.

Father McHugh was born to Bernard McHugh and Helen Sareghan McHugh on Jan. 5, 1930, in Portland. He attended St. Agatha Grade School and Central Catholic High School, then went on to Mount Angel Seminary and St. Edward Seminary. He also earned a master’s degree in education at Gonzaga University in Spokane.

He was ordained at St. Mary Cathedral May 18, 1957, by Archbishop Edward Howard.

Father McHugh taught at Central Catholic from 1957 to 1971, also serving at a number of Portland parishes during those years. In 1971, Father McHugh became associate pastor at Our Lady of the Lake, Lake Oswego, and in 1972 he was named pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish, Stayton. He returned to Our Lady of the Lake Parish as pastor in 1979, where he served until 1985, when he took a three-year assignment as a chaplain in the Military Ordinate. Father McHugh served his country a total of 14 years as a member of the U.S. Army, the U.S. Army Reserves, the Oregon National Guard and as chaplain of the Oregon National Guard. His highest rank was Lieutenant Colonel.

In 1988 he was invited to the Vatican for a retreat. He spent three months there in the presence of the Holy Father.

When he returned to the archdiocese in 1988, Father McHugh was parochial vicar for a year at St. Cecilia Parish, Beaverton; then, briefly, administrator at Our Lady of Victory Parish, Seaside; finishing his pastoral career at Sacred Heart, Gervais.

He retired in 1998, continuing to say the 8:30 a.m. Monday Mass at St. Agatha.

Father McHugh was an avid golfer and enjoyed many rounds of golf with his brothers, fellow priests and friends alike.   In celebration of his Golden Jubilee in 2007 the parishioners of Our Lady of the Lake presented him with golfing trip to Scotland. 

Father McHugh is survived by 18 nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions can be made to St. Agatha Church and School, Central High School, the Sisters of St. Mary’s or the Archdiocese of Portland.
