Russ Danielson, who oversaw growth and voiced a continued focus on mission for Providence Health & Services in Oregon, will retire late this year from his post as executive and senior vice president.

Under his watch, Providence charity care kept pace as the state’s economy slipped.

“It has been an honor to work for Providence, especially in the last year of economic challenges,” says Danielson. “Though I can point to a lot of accomplishments that make me tremendously proud, I have received the greatest satisfaction in seeing our employees and physicians in action during what have been some trying months. Their words and deeds testify to their dedication to our mission. It is clear that every day each one cares deeply for those we serve.”

Danielson says he is glad for Providence’s reputation for high quality and low cost.
With more than 17,000 employees in Oregon, Providence is Oregon’s largest private employer and the largest health system. Its Oregon operations include eight hospitals, Providence Health Plans, home health, hospice, long-term care, and physician clinics.

Under Danielson’s leadership, Providence in Oregon has received awards, including being ranked in the top 10 integrated health care networks nationally.

Danielson has won the respect of his fellow leaders.

“Russ is an outstanding health care leader, and one who will be tremendously missed,” says Greg Van Pelt, executive vice president for Providence Health & Services. “He is known for his integrity, his vision, and his compassion for all. We are deeply appreciative of his years of service to Providence.”

Providence will be looking both internally and externally for a replacement. Recruitment could take six to nine months, and Danielson will continue in his current position to help ensure a smooth transition.

In addition to his responsibilities with Providence, Danielson is a board member of University of Portland, Transition Projects and American Red Cross. He participates in many community and civic organizations, is past president of the Oregon Association of Hospitals and Health Systems, and is a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.

“Throughout the years, Russ Danielson has been a wonderful collaborator with the archdiocese,” said Archbishop John Vlazny. “We are proud of and grateful for the role Providence plays in accomplishing the healing mission of the church in this archdiocese.”

Before his current role, Danielson was chief executive for Providence’s Portland-area operations and chief operating officer for Providence Portland Medical Center.

“Providence is a part of my extended family,” says Danielson, “yet I leave knowing that our leadership team and every employee and physician who works with us will continue our 154-year tradition of care.”
