REDMOND — Stanley Jerome Sturza, a member of St. Thomas Parish here, died Nov. 11 of cancer. He was 78.
Mr. Sturza was born July 1, 1930, in Walla Walla, Wash. He moved to central Oregon in the 1930s. He graduated from Redmond High School in 1948. The first athlete from Redmond High to be offered an athletic scholarship to a large university, he attended the University of Oregon on a basketball scholarship. He served with the Army in Korea and was selected to play on the Army Baseball team. He was wounded in action before he could join the team. He married Phyllis Gillispie in 1954.
An accountant, he was the owner of Sturza’s Bookkeeping for many years and was co-owner with his wife of Eriksen’s Redmond Stationery until their retirement.
He is survived by his wife Phyllis; daughter Margaret Sturza Olson, Madras; daughter Lori Sturza Turel, Redmond; son Mike Sturza, brother Pete Sturza, Hermiston) and numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws and cousins.
