Nick Alfieri, a 2010 graduate of Jesuit High School, has created and directed a documentary about American football in Germany. The film was released on digital platforms Aug. 19 and will show in theaters in a few cities.

“Unicorn Town” follows a small town German team and its unlikely journey to success.

Germany is acquiring a taste for American football. Its league includes the Munich Cowboys, the Berlin Rebels, the Dresden Monarchs, and from a scenic small town near Munich, the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns. The town of 40,000 adores the Unicorns, who have become one of Europe’s best gridiron squads.

The fate of teams in smaller markets is one of the themes of “Unicorn Town.”

“Years in the making, this film has been a labor of love,” Alfieri said in a written statement. “I’m so excited for audiences to experience the incredible world of American football in Europe, as well as the inspiring culture of the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns, in this underdog story.”

Executive producer of the movie is Christian McCaffrey, running back for the Carolina Panthers and a graduate of Stanford University.

The Alfieri family has ties to Jesuit High, St. Pius Parish and Valley Catholic, where Nick’s mom Kelly is a longtime staffer in the athletic department.

Nick Alfieri played football at Jesuit and Georgetown University before attending USC Film School. He then headed to Germany to play for the Unicorns and has spent the past six years living between Germany and Portland.

The family is decked out in sports. The dad, Phil, played football at Oregon State and Kelly ran track at OSU. Nick’s sister Jamie, a 2008 Jesuit graduate, is a National Football League replay official. His brother Anthony, a 2012 Valley Catholic graduate, was a college football recruiter. His brother Joey, a 2014 Jesuit graduate, played football at Stanford and has had stints with several NFL teams. Another brother, Mikey, graduated from Jesuit in 2016, played football at OSU and now is a teammate on the Unicorns with Nick. The youngest sibling, Andy, graduated from Jesuit in 2020 and now plays football for Cal Berkeley.
