The Grotto in Northeast Portland held its 37th annual animal blessing Oct. 4, the feast of St. Francis of Assisi. In past years, the event was a happy crush of canines, felines, reptiles, rodents and winged creatures. A skunk even accepted a sprinkle of holy water. In 2020, because of the pandemic, the blessing had to go differently. There were smaller rites at three time slots and pet owners signed up ahead. The spirit of joy was just as strong, Grotto workers report. “We give thanks for the joy, the beauty, the love, the fidelity, the encouragement and the comfort that our animal companions have given to us,” said a statement from the sanctuary.
