Matt Powell returned to De La Salle North Catholic High School in Portland Jan. 2 to serve as interim president.

He steps in for Tim Hennessy, who helped start the school as advancement chief from 2003-2008, returning in 2014 as president.

Hennessy has stepped down over what the board of trustees described as “family medical concerns.”

Powell founded De La Salle North Catholic and served as its president until 2014.

He has been working as executive director of the Lasallian Christian Brothers Foundation in California.

Powell earned a bachelor’s degree in theology from the University of Portland, minoring in business administration.

He holds an executive certificate in nonprofit management from the Kellogg School of Business.

Patti O’Mara, chairwoman of the De La Salle North board of trustees, said a search is under way for a new president.

The school offers Catholic education at an affordable price by offering corporate internships at local businesses.

De La Salle North also is seeking a new home because Portland Public Schools has said it wants to reclaim the building it has leased to the Catholic school.
