MILWAUKIE — “At St. John the Baptist we are committed to helping to create leaders who are confident, compassionate and connected in faith and will put their service into action in our community,” says a statement from the Milwaukie school.

With that mission in mind, St. John the Baptist has adopted the theme “Oh, the Places You'll Go,” a tip of the hat to the Dr. Seuss coming-of-age book of the same name. “You have brains in your head. ... You can steer yourself any direction you choose,” the book says.

New teachers include St. Mary of Oregon Sister Juana Gutierrez in third grade, Crystal Akins in music, Tim Kluge for middle school religion, Rachel Joy in preschool 3, Melissa McGowan as a preschool aid and Alina Best for Spanish, art and learning support.

The school will launch a new program called “brain talk” with students.

Teachers will teach children about their brains and how to respond mindfully rather than react impulsively.
