To the Catholic Sentinel:

The Catholic Sentinel pointed out that the recent effort to ban tax-funded abortion in Oregon fell short of the 150,000 signatures goal.

The Sentinel also mentioned that Oregon is only one of 17 states where taxes fund abortion.

As a committee member who worked with a group that collected signatures at churches, the Oregon Zoo, Oaks Park, the Junior Rose Parade and other places, I was greatly impressed by the 95,000 signatures that were collected statewide.

We were all unpaid and had a budget of only $38,000.

The petition drives that succeeded used paid workers and had budgets of $100,000 or more. We did our best, but unfortunately not every parish got involved. Next time, we need every parish to participate.
