Dominican Sister Catherine Ormond Olds, known to most as Sister Cathy, is celebrating her 60-year jubilee with the Adrian Dominican Sisters.

She graduated from Dominican High School in Detroit. She entered the Adrian Dominican Congregation in 1960 and professed her first vows in 1962 and her final vows in 1966.

Sister Cathy holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Siena Heights University in Adrian, Michigan; a master’s degree in education from Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Illinois; and a master’s degree in hospital administration and a specialization certificate in long-term care, both from the University of Minnesota.

After teaching in Illinois, Sister Cathy went on to teach and serve as associate schools superintendent for the Archdiocese of Detroit; as associate director of Weber Retreat Center in Adrian, Michigan; and as intern and then as administrator at the Maria Health Care Center in Adrian until 1996.

In a nice example of cross-congregation service, she served as administrator of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary convent in Spokane until 2003. That year, she was elected to a six-year term as chapter prioress of the Adrian Dominican Sisters’ Dominican West Chapter, based in Phoenix.

Her last formal ministry was as health and well-being administrator at the Holy Names’ Sisters U.S.-Ontario Province in Lake Oswego.

She retired in 2018 and continues to reside in Lake Oswego.

“I have been very fortunate to have had different ministerial paths,” Sister Cathy said. “Each new ministry is an opportunity to meet, work with, and serve new persons. I have been blessed with opportunities beyond my imagination. And now in my ministry of prayer and presence, I am free to respond to assisting others in many new ways and most importantly experience the gift of being with my God and others.”
