In a one-minute video released on YouTube Sept. 13, Archbishop Alexander Sample explains his vocation.

“I became a priest in order to bring people to God and bring God to people,” he said, explaining that the Latin word that refers to the pope, “pontiff,” means a bridge.

The video begins with an image of a bridge over the River Tiber in Rome.

“I became a priest because I wanted to be a bridge, a bridge by which people could cross over to God and God could cross over to his people that he loves,” the archbishop said. “This means more to me than anything.”

“One fantastic bridge too!” said Jo Kelly.

“I’ll learn to be a bridge like you,” said Phuong Truong.
