The Portland area has a new little site for Marian prayer. On a patio behind Mater Dei Radio’s new offices on Sylvan Hill, a small grotto shelters a colorful statue of the Virgin Mary, patroness of the station.

Auxiliary Bishop Peter Smith blessed and dedicated the shrine Dec. 6, just two days before the station’s 30th anniversary.

Pat Ryan, executive director of Mater Dei, said he and board member Bill Allen located the property — 6249 SW Canyon Court — and were excited by the idea that there was room for a grotto.

“We are going to bring even more souls to Jesus through the Blessed Virgin Mary,” Ryan told dozens of supporters who came for the blessing.

After the official prayers, the crowd spontaneously began singing the Ave Maria hymn.
