Mary, “Our Lady of Good Counsel,” is the patroness of The National Council of Catholic Women and the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women. In western Oregon, the ACCW has for several decades made the image on a tapestry so it can be available for parishes, schools, meetings and special family events.

The women use the tapestry as a backdrop for conventions, meetings and retreats and when they gather to recite the rosary.

“Sometimes it goes to private homes or church halls for special birthdays, anniversaries and baptisms,” says Sue Anker, an ACCW officer.

On Jan. 14, the tapestry went to St. Rose School in Northeast Portland for a two-week stay. It stood in a corner of the front hall where faculty, students and parents saw it daily.

The centuries-old original hangs in Genazzano, Italy, a town near Rome, and is sometimes called the Madonna of the Popes. Many pontiffs have chosen to visit it with its history of answers to prayers.

Those who wish to schedule it for their parish, school, meeting or family event can call Genevieve Williams, 503-997-4553.

ACCW is planning a conference at The Grotto Saturday, April 13. The keynote speaker will be Father Jon Buffington, who will address the saints as role models. Julie Onderko also will address the conference.

Registration begins at 9 a.m., and the day closes at 4:30 p.m.

All are welcome. A $40 fee covers lunch and conferences. Registration checks can go to Sue Anker, 13000 NE Pacific Ct., Portland, OR 97230.
