Archbishop Alexander Sample speaks to a crowd gathered at the Lovejoy Surgicenter to kick off 40 Days for Life Sept. 20. The occasion was only the second time the archbishop has attended the campaign’s opening prayer vigil. “This is such incredible work on behalf of the life and the dignity of every human person, and that includes, in a very special way, not just the unborn child but the woman faced with the difficult pregnancy. We are the loving face of God for that woman,” Archbishop Sample said, thanking the vigil keepers for their devotion to the campaign. In addition to his speech, the archbishop led the ecumenical crowd in prayer. Other speakers included former radio personality Dina Marie Hale, speaker Cindy Brunk and activist Jeff Jimerson. Attendees prayed and sang hymns outside the Northwest Portland clinic, which offers abortions. The other 40 Days for Life campaigns in Oregon will take place in Bend, Eugene, Klamath Falls, Salem and St. Helens.
