Q —As a Catholic, is it morally permissible to believe in evolution? What is the Catholic teaching regarding evolution versus creationism?

A — The short answer to the question, “Is it permissible for a Catholic to believe in evolution?” is “Yes.”

Understood very broadly, “evolution” refers to attempts to describe scientifically the generation and development of something new out of some pre-existing reality to which the new reality is tied through a complex interplay of both continuity and change.

The Christian doctrine of creation maintains that everything that is comes from God and, moreover, in line with John 1:3, “All things came into being through (the Word), and without him not one thing came into being.”

The church does not dictate how creation develops. That is the proper sphere of the scientific community.
