Q —What is the composition of the holy oils? Also, what happens to ‘leftovers’?
A — The holy oils are chrism, the oil of the sick, and the oil of catechumens. They are all olive oil.
Balsam is mixed with the sacred chrism. The oils are blessed by the local bishop at the Chrism Mass every year. What happens to ‘leftovers’?
They should either be burned in the Easter Vigil fire or buried, but never simply thrown away.
Burial should take place on the church grounds or in a Catholic cemetery.
