The annual golf tournament to benefit the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Portland is set for Friday, Aug. 19, at Glendoveer Golf Course in outer Northeast Portland. Check-in starts at 11 a.m. and the shotgun tee-off is at 12:30 p.m. Dinner follows.

The tournament, in its 28th year, is named for Jim Altenhofen, a St. Rose of Lima, Central Catholic and University of Portland basketball star in the 1950s. As a college sophomore, he went with the Pilots’ basketball team to the NCAA tournament.

During his working career, Altenhofen volunteered at St. Vincent de Paul for more than 30 years and was on the staff from 1998 until his death from cancer in 2003.

Mike and Joani Concannon and an anonymous donor have teamed up to offer $30,000 in matching challenge funds.

Proceeds from the tournament help St. Vincent de Paul administer and distribute rent, utility and food aid in the Portland metro area.
