Catholic Youth Organization/Camp Howard says it will not hold its annual fall fundraising gala.

Safety concerns and crowd restrictions because of the coronavirus have spiked one of the top Catholic fundraising events of the year. The Champions of Faith Dinner has been pushed forward to Oct. 20, 2021. Lou Holtz, former University of Notre Dame football coach, will speak.

“This is a challenging time for everyone involved with CYO sports and Camp Howard,” Sister Krista von Borstel wrote in a June 19 note to supporters.

CYO spring sports and summer camp at Camp Howard had to be canceled and upcoming fall and winter sports depend on the state of the virus and government directives.

CYO/Camp Howard has streamlined operations. All but three staff have been furloughed, including Sister Krista, a member of the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon. She will continue to work without pay.

“The CYO/Camp Howard staff is a resilient group and are working hard as a team to be ready when it is possible to offer sports again,” she said.

Sister Krista asked backers to contribute to CYO/Camp Howard if possible to cyocamphoward.org. She also said all Catholics need to support Catholic schools.

“Sports will be back but not without the Catholic Schools, so we need to rally around the schools,” she said.
