LAKE OSWEGO — Mary’s Woods retirement community hosted a two-day food-packing event Dec. 7-8, organized to distribute 35,000 meals to neighbors in need.

Residents and employees created assembly lines to pack fortified chicken flavored rice and vegetable soup.

The packs were distributed via Meals on Wheels, Urban Gleaners, West Linn Food Pantry, and Catholic Charities’ Germaine’s Kitchen and Café.

“The resident enthusiasm for this event was inspiring,” said Colette Rees, spokeswoman for Mary’s Woods. Rees predicted the event may become annual.

Mary’s Woods, founded by the Holy Names Sisters, is the first senior living community in the country to partner with the national non-profit Meals of Hope, an organization that brings meal packing events to community groups and schools across the country.
