    WOODBURN — Robert Joseph Dryden, 85, a member of St. Luke Parish, died of heart failure Feb. 18. There will be a rosary at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 28, at St. Luke Church, followed by a funeral Mass at 11 a.m.
  • OREGON CITY — Angelina Velasquez died Feb. 12 in Oregon City. There will be a funeral Mass at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, at St. John the Apostle Church, followed by a committal ceremony at Willamette National Cemetery at 2:30 p.m.
  • Fr. Harry Holwell

    He played piano skillfully and could get a room singing. Friends say Father Harry Holwell could bring out good in people. Father Holwell, the English priest who served at St. Patrick Mission in Cave Junction from 1997 to 2007, died Feb. 14 in Portland.

    SALEM — Gayle E. Blek, 74, passed away Feb. 8. She was a terrific friend to all. Gayle's funeral will be held Saturday, Feb. 29, at Queen of Peace Church. Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. preceded by the rosary 10:30 a.m. and musical prelude.

    Sister of St. Mary of Oregon Lawdean Lamberger, also known as Sister Cecilia Lawrence, died Feb. 16. There will be a vigil service Thursday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. at the Motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon and a funeral Mass Friday, Feb. 21, at 4 p.m. at the Motherhouse Chapel. Interment will be Monday, Feb. 24, at 9 a.m. in the Sisters’ Cemetery

    Mary “Lynn” Jones, 75, died peacefully in her Canby home just before midnight Feb. 2, surrounded by family. There was a funeral Mass at St. Philip Benizi Church in Oregon City.

    ROSEMONT, Pennsylvania — Maureen Widmeier, SHCJ, who taught at Catholic schools in Portland for 12 years, died on her 97th birthday of complications of the flu at Holy Child Center. There was a funeral Mass at Holy Child Chapel.

    Gonzaga University’s beloved longtime president and chancellor, Jesuit Father Bernard Coughlin, 97, died Jan. 28 at Sacred Heart Jesuit Center in Los Gatos, California. There will be a visitation Thursday, Feb. 20, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Della Strada Jesuit Chapel in Spokane, followed by a vigil at St. Aloysius Church in Spokane 6:30 p.m. The funeral Mass is Friday, Feb. 21, at 11 a.m. The reception immediately follows the Mass in the Cataldo Hall Globe Room.

    Holy Names Sister Mary Richard, 91, died Jan. 16. A Sister of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary for 70 years, her funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, in the Chapel of the Holy Names at Marylhurst. Burial follows at the sisters’ cemetery.

    Michael David Whitmarsh,79, died peacefully Jan. 25, surrounded by family in his King City home. There will be a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Southeast Portland. It will be preceded by the rosary at 10:30 a.m. A reception will follow.

    Mary Ann King, 64, a longtime resident of the Cornelius community, died Saturday evening, Jan. 25, at the Tuality Community Hospital in Hillsboro.
    Father Patrick Neary will celebrate a funeral Mass Friday, Feb. 7, at 11 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Church in North Portland. Family and friends are invited to attend a reception immediately following in St. Pius X parish hall in Northwest Portland. Burial rites and interment will follow the reception at the Mount Calvary Cemetery in Southwest Portland at approximately 3 p.m.

    Sister of St. Mary of Oregon Ina Marie Nosack died Jan. 24. There was a vigil and funeral Mass at the Motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon. Interment will take place at 9 a.m., Monday, Feb. 3 in the Sisters’ Cemetery.

    OREGON CITY — Irene Frances Fisher, 79, died peacefully the morning of Sunday, Nov. 24 at her home, surrounded by her loved ones after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s. There will be a rosary at 11 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, at St. John the Apostle Church. Interment will follow at St. John’s Cemetery.

    Helen Catherine Van Dyke, 91, a longtime resident of the Hillsboro community, died Nov. 19 at the Tuality Community Hospital in Hillsboro. There was a funeral Mass at St. Matthew Church in Hillsboro. Vault interment was at the St. Matthew Parish Cemetery.

    FOREST GROVE — Thomas “T.J.” Johnston, 73, died Oct. 14 at his home. There will be a funeral Mass Monday, Oct. 28, at 11 a.m. at the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, 4285 N.W. Visitation Road in Verboort, with Father Michael Vuky, celebrant. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will precede the Mass at 10:30 a.m. Burial rites and interment will follow at the Visitation Parish Cemetery in Verboort.

    ST. BENEDICT — Benedictine Father Augustine DeNoble, O.S.B., 94, a monk of Mount Angel Abbey, died Nov. 9. At the time of his death, he was the eldest member of the monastic community. There will be a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, in Mount Angel Abbey Church with burial in the abbey cemetery to follow.

    SPOKANE, Wash. — Holy Names Sister Patricia Ann Larson, 90, died early the morning of Oct. 28 at Memory Care, South Hill Village in Spokane. There was a funeral Mass at that facility, with burial at Holy Cross Cemetery.

    OREGON CITY — Clara Emilia Wolf Bomotti died Oct. 13 in her bed at Friendship Health Center. There was a funeral Mass at St. John the Apostle Church.

    MARYLHURST —Sister Sharon Collver, 80, died at Mary’s Woods Oct. 20. A member of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary for 60 years, her funeral will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 30, in the Chapel of the Holy Names, Marylhurst. Burial follows at Holy Names Cemetery.
  • Fr. John Wironen
    Holy Cross Father John Wironen, who served many years in the Archdiocese of Portland, died Oct. 16. Services will be in Indiana, with visitation 3:30–7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, at Moreau Seminary, Notre Dame, with a wake service at 7:30 p.m. The funeral Mass will take place at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on the Notre Dame campus at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 24. Burial will be in the community cemetery at Notre Dame.

    DAYTON — Francis Hillary Dummer, 89, of Dayton died Oct. 16 of a heart attack at Providence Hospital in Newberg. There will be a 11:30 a.m. rosary followed by a 12 p.m. funeral Mass Friday, Oct. 25, at St. James Church, McMinnville.
  • GRESHAM — Edward Osterholm, 88, a member of Ascension Parish in Southeast Portland, died October 10. A celebration of life is planned for 1 - 4 p.m., Friday, Oct. 25, at his son Gary's home.

    Anna Marie Lae, 96, died Sept. 25. She was a long-time member of St. Clare Parish, then St. John Fisher. The funeral Mass was held at St. John Fisher, with the Rite of Committal in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

    MARYLHURST — Sister Eleanor “Ellie” Kratz, 83, died at the Marie-Rose Center Sept. 28. A member of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary for 63 years, her funeral will be held at 11 a.m., Oct. 17, in the Chapel of the Holy Names, Marylhurst. Burial follows at the Holy Names Cemetery.

    SCRANTON, Penn. — Sister of the Immaculate Heart of Mary M. Immaculata Norton died Sept. 25 at Our Lady of Peace Residence. There was a funeral there.

    Paul Edwin Voeller, beloved husband of 56 years, loving father to four children and grandfather to seven, died peacefully Sept. 27. There will be a rosary at 10 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 4, at St. Cecilia Church in Beaverton. 
  • Priest who evangelized with intellect dies at 93
    UPDATED SEPT. 27, 12:32 P.M. Father Edmond Bliven, an intellectual giant of the Archdiocese of Portland, died Sept. 22 at age 93.  An apostle of Catholic common sense with an uproarious laugh, Father Bliven served in western Oregon parishes and was longtime editorial page editor of the Catholic Sentinel. He attended a session of the Second Vatican Council and was active in the ecumenical movement.

    Norma Mae Panowicz died peacefully of natural causes Aug. 23, a month after her 94th birthday. There will be a rosary at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, at St. Rita Church, 10029 NE Prescott St., Portland. The funeral Mass is at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, at St. Rita Church.

    OREGON CITY — Martin (Marty) Clyde Abelsen, 72, passed peacefully the morning of August 30, 2019, at his home in Oregon City, surrounded by his wife and three daughters, after a courageous battle with Lewy body dementia. A rosary will be recited at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 6, at St. John the Apostle Church (417 Washington St, Oregon City), with a funeral Mass at 11:30 am, followed by a reception at the parish.

    LAKE OSWEGO — Holy Names Sister Jane Lewis, 93, died July 29 at Mary’s Woods at Maryhurst. There was a funeral Mass in the Chapel of the Holy Names, Marylhurst, followed by burial in the Sisters’ cemetery.

    Marilyn Clare Zenner Prince, 79, died Aug. 12 after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in June. Funeral Masses will be held on Friday, Aug. 23, at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church in Oroville, Washington; Wednesday, Aug. 28, at 10 a.m. at St. James Cathedral in Seattle; and Thursday, Aug. 29, at 1 p.m. at All Saints Church in Portland. Msgr. Tim Murphy will celebrate the Mass at All Saints. A reception at the Multnomah Athletic Club in Portland will follow the funeral service at All Saints.

  • OREGON CITY — Evelyn Hogland, 95, a member of St. John the Apostle Parish here, died June 28. There will be a funeral Mass at St. John the Apostle at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13.

    Richard Carvell Hedlund, 90, died July 11. There will be a funeral Mass at 11 a.m., Friday, July 26, at St. Mary Cathedral in Portland.

    NOTRE DAME, Indiana — Holy Cross Father Claude Pomerleau., 80, died of cancer early morning Sunday, July 21. Visitation will be from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 25, at Moreau Seminary, Notre Dame, Ind., where there will be a wake service at 7:30 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on the Notre Dame campus on Friday, July 26, at 9:30 a.m. 

    The regular 12:05 p.m. Mass at the Chapel of Christ the Teacher at the University of Portland on Tuesday, July 23, was offered for Father Claude's eternal rest. After classes resume, when more faculty, students, and staff can participate, a larger memorial Mass will be celebrated in gratitude for the presence and ministry of Father Claude.

  • Joan Renee Mitchell-Arnold, 78, died June 29 in Portland after a long battle with multiple illnesses and cancer. There will be a funeral Mass at Christ the King Church. The time and date will be announced in the future.
