Anthony Benjamin passed away July 3 at home surrounded by loved ones. There will be a Rosary at 10:30 a.m. and funeral Mass at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 23, at Holy Trinity Church, 13715 SW Walker Rd. Beaverton. Private burial with military honors at Willamette National Cemetery.

He was born March 22, 1931, in Lafayette, Louisiana, the oldest of five boys and one girl. In his early years, he developed a lifelong love of playing and coaching basketball. After school, he served in the Army during the Korean War. He arrived in Oregon in the early 1960s, and raised five children: Frances, Adrienne, Elia, Toni and John.

He loved cars and struck up a friendship with Tom Heitzman at Heitzman Body & Paint. He became a painter, estimator, foreman and ultimately general manager. He also became acquainted with Tom’s daughter Barbara; the two were married in 1976, and he helped raise three stepchildren: Thomas, Lisa, and Sarah.

Together, Anthony and Barbara ran the business until his retirement in 1996.

Anthony loved farming and raised cattle for 30 years. He was a very active member of Holy Trinity Church and the Beaverton Rotary Club.

Anthony is survived by his wife, Barbara; brothers Joseph Benjamin of Portland and Alvin (Norma) of Canby; sister, Marie Breaux of Lafayette; daughters Elia (Sam) Whitehead of Portland, Toni (Stephen) Fields of Hampton, Virginia, and Adrienne Hoggans of Lafayette; son Thomas Johnson of Beaverton; daughters Lisa (William) Thomson of Banks and Sarah Steiger of Santa Paula, California; 16 grandchildren and dozens of great-grandchildren.
