Barbara Bruton died peacefully Dec. 1, surrounded by her children.

Mrs. Bruton was born in Spokane, Wash., Sept. 9, 1931, the daughter of Joseph and Viola Fitzell. Her two sisters, Ann and Patty predeceased her.

She grew up in both Portland and Spokane and received her

undergraduate degree, as well as her RN nursing degree, at the University of Portland.

While working at a hospital and enjoying life in San Francisco,

Barb met her future husband, Orval Bruton. After his stint in the Navy, they married in 1957 and moved back to Oregon where she worked to support Mr. Bruton’s getting his bachelor’s degree in engineering at Oregon State University. The young couple moved to the Beaverton area where she raised their four children and worked part time in nursing, ending up at Kaiser Permanente.

In her spare time, Mrs. Bruton liked to play bridge and help out at the Catholic churches she was involved with. She became very involved in the ESL program and supported local migrant worker camps affiliated with Saint Pius X Church.

After Mr. and Mrs. Bruton retired, they loved spending time with family at Rockaway Beach.

After Mr. Bruton died in 2004, Mrs. Bruton moved to Hillsboro where she became involved in WOW (Women of Wisdom) and Beaverton’s Faith Cafe.

Mrs. Bruton is survived by her children, Carrie, Catherine, Maureen and Matt; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
