JEROME, Idaho — Benedictine Father Andrew Baumgartner, 86, died of heart failure June 2. There was a funeral Mass at the Monastery of the Ascension in Jerome.

Father Baumgartner was born March 12, 1934, in Genesee, Idaho. He went to the Minor (high school) Seminary at Mt. Angel, joined Mt. Angel Abbey in 195, and was ordained in 1960. He earned a master’s degree in mathematics from Colorado State University and taught mathematics in the seminary. He also served as business manager at the abbey and in seminary administration. He went to the Monastery of the Ascension in 1995, where he was organist and business manager. He was involved in the local ministerial association, Cursillo, and Kairos, an ecumenical prison ministry. He was an accomplished hiker who completed the Pacific Crest Trail two and a half times. He is remembered as a kind and cheerful person and a prayerful and dedicated priest.

He is survived by a sister, Dorothy Diehl, and several nephews and nieces.
