Benedictine Brother Brian Clearman, 79, a monk of Mount Angel Abbey, died May 29. Vigils of the Dead will be sung Monday, June 1, at 7:30 p.m. The funeral Mass will be livestreamed Tuesday, June 2, at 10 a.m. at the Abbey church at mountangelabbey.org/livestream. Burial will immediately follow in the Abbey cemetery.

Brother Brian, who was 53 years a professed monk, was born March 19, 1941, in Longview, Washington. His studies from 1960 to 1962 at St. Martin’s College in Lacey, Washington, brought him into his first contact with a Benedictine institution. He graduated from Portland State University in 1964.

Patrick Clearman entered Mount Angel Abbey, where he made his simple profession as a monk Sept. 29, 1966, receiving the name of Brian.

In 1974, he earned a master’s degree from the University of Oregon. He has served as a seminary high school teacher, a business office staff person, and, since 2002, as the Abbey’s archivist. He was also the author “Transportation Markings: A Study in Communication,” a book about land, sea and air transportation signals that was published in 1981.
