Evelyn Mary Van Agtmael, 99, died Jan. 15 in Sublimity, surrounded by her family. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Jordan and its mission, St. Patrick, in Lyons, as well as St. Boniface Parish in Sublimity. The funeral Mass was at Our Lady of Lourdes Church.

Mrs. Van Agtmael was born Feb. 5, 1921, in Elbridge Township, Oceana County, Michigan to Walter and Ella Lathrop.

After marrying George Van Agtmael, the couple moved to Vancouver, Washington, in the early 1940s. She worked as a welder in the Kaiser Shipyards during World War II.

The Van Agtmaels moved to their “homeplace” on Highway 226 in the early 1950s. She loved taking care of her children, baking and gardening. She grew flowers that she would arrange and deliver to her community family. The couple were instrumental in the growth of the Shangri-La Oregon, a non-profit that serves individuals with disabilities or disadvantages. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Altar Society and Christian Mothers.

Mrs. Van Agtmael was preceded in death by her husband, George; her son George C., daughter Mary Lou, and sisters: Barbara Greiner, Maudie Burrington, LaVerle Greiner; and brother Edward Lathrop.

She is survived by her children: Theresa Hurd of Elma, Washington; Cecilia Cox of Medford; Angela Van Agtmael of Centralia, Washington; Jim Van Agtmael of Turner; Kathleen Foltz of Aumsville; Lillian Van Agtmael of Camas, Washington; and Jani Etzel of Aumsville; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; her sister: Marguerite Fitzsimmons of Michigan; daughter-in-law: Mary M. Van Agtmael of Albany and sister-in-law: Evelyn Lathrop of Michigan.

Interment was in Our Lady Of Lourdes Cemetery.
