Gerard J. Barnes, 65, passed away peacefully Oct. 14. A rosary will be held Thursday, Nov. 4, at 11:15 a.m. with a funeral Mass at 12 p.m. at St Ignatius Church in Southeast Portland. Interment will be at Gethsemani Catholic Cemetery following the funeral Mass, after which a reception will be held at the Aerie at Eagles Landing Golf course in Happy Valley.

Gerard was born in Portland June 12,1956, to Vincent and Mary Barnes, and was the oldest of four children. He grew up in Southeast Portland and attended St. Ignatius elementary school and graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1974 and was class valedictorian.

Gerard started his college years at the University of San Francisco studying pre-med. In 1977 he returned to Oregon and enrolled at Oregon State University in the College of Pharmacy.

Gerard married Diane Van Veen in 1977. They settled in Milwaukie after Gerard graduated from Oregon State University with a degree in pharmacy in 1981. His first job as a pharmacist was at the Portland Veterans Hospital and later with Beverly Pharmaceutical.

The family moved to Kent, Washington, In 1993 when Gerard accepted a director role at Pharmacy Corporation of America. In the early 2000s, he became a traveling director of hospital pharmacies for Cardinal Healthcare. He enjoyed traveling and the challenges each new assignment brought. He retired from pharmacy in 2017 and moved back to the Portland area in 2018.

Gerard spent his final years at Miramont Pointe in Clackamas. He enjoyed his time there and had many friends among both the residents and staff. Gerard had a lifelong love of Westerns and action movies and loved sharing them with friends and family. He also enjoyed pinochle, poker (no-peeky baseball specifically), sushi, and an occasional cigar with a Highland scotch whiskey.

Gerard is survived by three children, Nathan Barnes, Jeremy Barnes and Emily Barnes (Estes); and granddaughter Myrna Barnes; and his three siblings Michael Barnes, Margaret Barnes and Ann Johnson. Gerard was preceded in death by his parents Vincent and Mary Barnes.
