Iris Carty died at home Jan. 26. She was born and grew up in St. Johns, now North Portland. Her mother, Mary Louanna Joyce, ran the White House hotel and Iris and her sister, Gladys, grew up there, attending Assumption Grade School and helping their mother after their father died. She attended Immaculata Academy and loved to play piano — especially popular tunes — by ear.

Iris married Kevin Carty in 1942 and they raised eight children. She was a devoted mother and active Catholic. Her eldest son was in the first graduating class at Jesuit; the other boys also attended, with daughters at LaSalle and St. Mary's Academy. Later in life, Iris travelled extensively in the United States and abroad, but always loved the Oregon Coast best. She loved to bake, play crosswords and Scrabble, and grow flowers —hollyhocks, foxglove and sweet peas. Her home was the family hub, where birthdays, Easter Egg hunts, St. Patrick’s Day and every Christmas were celebrated.

Her husband, son Barry, and daughter Katie predeceased her. She is survived by sons Patrick (Margo), Brian (Te), Terry (Lauri), and Kip (Jan); daughters Maggi Olson (Rod) and Kelly: and daughter-in-law Janice. She had six grandkids and 11 great-grandkids who she adored, and scores of nieces and nephews across the country. There will be a funeral Mass at Holy Redeemer June 4.
