Joe Michael Boitano, 78, passed away peacefully April 9 at Adventist Hospital in Portland. A funeral Mass was held at St. Peter Catholic Church.

His parents, Mario and Irene Boitano, were part owners of City Sanitary in Southeast Portland. Joe bought the business when he was discharged after serving in Vietnam. Through the years he purchased neighboring routes, and he grew City Sanitary Service to the fifth largest in Portland. After 45 years he retired and sold the business to Hoodview Disposal.

Joe met Sue Miller in a church group, the Chancellor Club, and they were soul mates from the beginning. They married July 6, 1968, and enjoyed 52 years together.

Joe was a proud member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society for 36 years and a founding member of St. Peter’s Knights of Columbus. Joe and his family belonged to St. Peter Parish for 52 years. They were devoted campers and were part of a group that spent two or three long weekends per year together. The families all grew up together. He loved gardening, a talent he got from his family and passed down to his children.

Survivors include his wife, Sue Boitano; children, Jim, Annie Tyler, John and Mary Thomas; and grandchildren, Evan, Silas, Rocky and Sky. Joe loved them all very much.

Interment was in Gethsemani Catholic Cemetery.
