John J. Hortsch, 84, died Monday, April 26 in Salem.

He was born in Stayton to Ben and Ann Hortsch, and lived most of his life in the Aumsville area. He served in the United States National Guard during the Korean War, and worked most of his life in the plywood industry.

He was a member of St. Mary Parish in Shaw and was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus, Shaw Council. For many years he organized their food booth for festivals. John served on the Aumsville planning and budget commissions for many years. He enjoyed gardening and raising dahlias.

John married Edna Gubbels July 7, 1956, in Silverton. She preceded him in death in 2016.

He is survived by his sons: John M. (Laura) Hortsch of Aumsville, James Hortsch of Aumsville, Michael Hortsch of Salem and Gary (Eva) Hortsch of Portland; brothers: Harry Hortsch of Salem and Jerry Hortsch of Keizer; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. His sister, Lorraine Butler, preceded him in death. Recitation of rosary was Friday, April 30, and Mass of Christian Burial was Saturday, May 1, both at St. Mary Church in Shaw. Interment was in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Shaw.
