SALEM — Leona Marie Schaffers, 100, died July 6 in Salem. A private funeral mass for family will be held on July 16, (available to stream by contacting St. Vincent de Paul Church). Following the Mass there will be a graveside service at Calvary Cemetery in Mount Angel, which will be open to a maximum of 10 people with masks.

She was born March 4, 1920, in Turner to Albert and Anna Schmidt. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Gervais High School.

In 1940 she married Joseph Schaffers (deceased 1983). The couple raised nine children,

Mrs. Schaffers was a longtime member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish. She enjoyed games and played on numerous bowling leagues. Most recently she relished sharing her success in scoring 300 in perfect games while Wiibowling and playing pool with family and friends. Her family describes her as a loving and devoted mother who will be missed.

She was preceded in death by her daughters Marianne Schaffers (deceased 1993) and Therese Foster (deceased 2012) and all her brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her children Elaine Perko, Joan Schaffers, Dorothy Mellon, Clare Bronec, John Schaffers, Patricia Schaffers and Barbara Lobdell; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
