Holy Names Sister Mary Richard, 91, died Jan. 16. A Sister of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary for 70 years, her funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, in the Chapel of the Holy Names at Marylhurst. Burial follows at the sisters’ cemetery.

The daughter of George and Lulabelle Fowler Richard, Sister Mary grew up in Reedsport and Portland. After graduating from St. Mary’s Academy, she entered the Sisters’ novitiate and received the name Sister Marian Arthur.

Sister Mary was a primary grade teacher in several Holy Names schools in Oregon, including 10 years in Medford where she was greatly loved by her students and their parents.

On leaving the classroom, Sister Mary worked in community service, primarily on the Marylhurst campus. Over time she was receptionist at the Convent of the Holy Names and helped in the Sisters’ Care Center at Marylhurst. She brought her cheerful generosity to the Albertina Kerr Center at Marylhurst. She also volunteered in the registrar’s office at Marylhurst College and tutored at The Madeleine School in Northeast Portland.

Sister Mary is survived by her sister-in-law, a niece and nephews, and members of her religious community.
