Thomas Unitas Barwick, 59, died May 6 in Happy Valley.

Mr. Barwick was born in October 1960 in Victorville, California. He grew up in Portland with his mom Karen and sister Cindy. He loved playing sports with his best friend, Greg, including little league baseball and basketball. He graduated from Madison High School in 1978.

While working at Elmer’s Restaurant as a cook, Mr. Barwick met and fell in love with a hostess named Anne. The young couple dated for two years before marrying on July 10, 1982, at Columbia Edgewater Golf Club in Portland. They enjoyed wonderful adventures together, including working at Honey Baked Hams and raising two sons, Justin and Joshua.

After Joshua was born, Mr. Barwick went to work with his in-laws at Sheridan Fruit Company. His daily schedule had him working seven days a week, starting at 5 a.m., but he never complained. Mr. Barwick loved Sheridan and the employees that worked there. Together he and his father-in-law, Vince, grew Sheridan Fruit Co. into a premier wholesale and retail store in the Portland area. Mr. Barwick was vice president and general manager.

The family attended St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church in Southwest Portland, with Mr. Barwick serving in many capacities. He was also a devoted father, coaching sports for his sons. He instilled in them an ethic for hard work and a passion for sports that continues to this day. Mr. Barwick loved watching the Portland Trail Blazers and Seattle Seahawks, as well as other sports teams. Having lunch with his friend Hank was a bright spot during the work week. His big joy was going to Sunriver with his family every year and enjoying Central Oregon. In 2019, his first grandson was born. His family describes Mr. Barwick as being over the moon. He was a devoted “Pappi” to little Moses.

Mr. Barwick was also an avid dog and animal lover.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Karen.

Mr. Barwick is survived by his wife Anne, sister Cindy, sons Justin (Caiti) and Joshua (Sachia) grandson Moses and nephews Derrick and Alexander.

A celebration of life will occur at a later date when it is safe for everyone to do so.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Mr. Barwick’s name to the Oregon Humane Society. Private Entombment was held at River Abbey Mausoleum in Portland.
