MOUNT ANGEL — Verna Scharbach 102, died of old age Jan. 24 in her home in Mount Angel. A graveside service is planned later in the year with the Benedictine Sisters in Mount Angel.

Mrs. Scharbach was born June 24, 1918, in Silverton. She was a lifelong Mt. Angel resident, a mother of four, school cook and ballroom dancer. The Oregonian featured her, when she was 100, in a story about her 50 years of service as a volunteer for Mission Benedict (the food bank and homeless shelter) and Mount Angel Senior Center. She was also an avid gardener and friend and confidant of many.

She married August Scharbach in January 1935. He died Dec. 20, 1971.

Mrs. Scharbach was also preceded in death by her son Robert.

She is survived by her children John, Susan and Nancy; her sisters, Dorothy Holmes and Donna Annen; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
