KGW television news in Portland last month featured a Portland priest as its local coronavirus pandemic hero for the day.

Paulist Father Jim Kolb has served as pastor of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish in Southwest Portland for 19 years. As part of that ministry, he is the busy chaplain on Pill Hill, where Oregon Health and Science University and Doernbecher Children’s Hospital sit. During the pandemic, Father Kolb has not been able to visit those hospitals, so has chosen to have the church bell rung at noon each day in honor of nearby medical staff. The sound carries along the hill to the facilities and Father Kolb has received calls of thanks.

Father Kolb started the routine, but several parishioners now come by to keep it up.

Parishioner Kathy Sabel nominated her pastor for the honor.

“Over the years he has become a much loved visitor by the doctors and nurses,” said Sabel.
