The Catholic Youth Organization high school City Tournament finished Feb. 16. The tourney wraps up a season high school youths say is fun and competitive. For many players, the tournament is a highlight of their high school experience.

The CYO basketball season started with games just before Christmas.   There were close to 40 high school teams and almost 400 participants.   Each team played seven regular season games and competed in leagues with varying intensity. The “Blue” league is highest, “Green” is middle and “Orange” is the most recreational.

Most regular season games take place at The Beaverton Hoop YMCA. The University of Portland offered the Beauchamp Recreation and Wellness Center for two different weekends.

While most high school games took place on Sundays during January and February, it is tradition to play on the Saturday before Super Bowl Sunday.

Because CYO teams from grades 1 to 8 also play on Saturday, some grade school teams were able to play at The Hoop before watching the high school games. CYO officials heard from many coaches and participants that it was fun for the grade school kids to watch the older athletes. Some may not know that CYO offers a basketball program to students when they move on to high school.

“We want to thank all of our volunteer coaches, for whom this wouldn’t be possible if they didn’t step up to help,” said a statement from CYO. “We value the time and energy they dedicate to our program. We would also like to wish all of the seniors the best as they graduate and move on to the next adventure in their lives.”
