St. Clare School in Southwest Portland held Sunflower Day on March 31. Sunflowers are the national flower of Ukraine and the symbol of St. Clare, patroness of the school.

Students wore blue and gold, the colors of Ukraine, wrote prayers and brought several thousand dollars in donations to help Ukrainians under attack by Russia. The funds will go through Catholic Relief Services. The school also held a prayer.

“Service is at the core of who we are as a Catholic school,” said Cathy Kollars, who teaches social studies to junior high students at St. Clare.

KGW television covered the day, interviewing Kollars, who said her aim is to cultivate empathy, compassion and hope in her students. Kollars told the reporter that as a Christian, she knows that all manner of death is followed by resurrection.
