MILWAUKIE — For Sarah Brentano’s first year as principal of Christ the King School here, students and new music director Edward Atkinson welcomed her with A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, performed on the evening of Dec. 19.

“The students were so excited to share their joyful anticipation of the birth of Jesus with their families and community through their beautiful songs,” said Brentano.

The performance is a service of Scripture and song that dates to the late 19th century. It consists of nine Scripture lessons that recount the fall, the promise of a Messiah, the Incarnation and the great commission to preach the good news. Each lesson is followed by a carol or other song that reflects on the lesson’s message and a brief prayer.

Msgr. John Cihak and Deacon Randy Hoang presided during the festival in support of their goal to work with parents to help students learn, grow and develop to their full potential spiritually, academically, morally, physically and emotionally.
