For seven years and counting, Cathedral School in Northwest Portland has maintained the designation as one of only two schools in Oregon to be recognized by Apple as an Apple Distinguished School.

Open to all K-12 schools in the world, the Apple program was created to inspire student creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and to cultivate environments in which students are excited and curious about learning.

According to a statement from Apple, “Apple Distinguished Schools are some of the most innovative schools in the world. They’re centers of leadership and educational excellence that demonstrate our vision of exemplary learning environments.”

In 2012, Cathedral School began the application process for becoming a distinguished school, then, Apple technology has enabled Cathedral to become a leader of innovative education, according to school staff. There’s a 1-to-1 student-to-iPad ratio, “which enhances teaching and improves learning by engaging students in the research and critical thinking skills necessary for success in the 21st century,” reads a press release from the school.

For Cathedral middle school teacher Mitch Overley: “Learning is not confined to the walls of the classroom.”

Teaching students to code has been a priority since the inception of the 1-to-1 iPad initiative. Currently, Cathedral is equipped with four 3D printers and various connected devices to teach coding and robotics to all grade levels.

Additionally, support for innovation from both administration and community members allows Cathedral’s teachers the freedom to plan lessons and assessments to meet the needs of all learners. Online planning tools allow teachers to digitally collaborate to teach cross-disciplinary lessons.

As one of only 470 designated schools globally, “Cathedral School is proud to be a leader in classroom connectivity in the Northwest,” said school leaders.
