De La Salle North Catholic will celebrate 61 graduates on Saturday, June 4, 6 p.m. in the Chiles Center at the University of Portland. The previous evening a baccalaureate service will take place in St. Charles Borromeo Church, adjacent to the school’s new campus in Northeast Portland.
The Class of 2022 could be called “The Comeback Class.” they’ve weathered a host of shifts and changes. In 2018, their high school journey started in the former Kenton school building, then COVID hit during their sophomore spring, and they subsequently endured more than a year of remote learning. Their launch back to in-person learning happened at De La Salle’s new campus with the dust of construction barely having settled. Through all the challenges they have persevered and live out the school’s motto: “Enter to learn, leave to serve.”
“In my first year as principal at DLSNC, I have spent every day on this new campus witnessing the kindness, generosity, and grace of the class of 2022,” said Principal Erin Reid. “From students checking in on one another’s well-being to offering assistance to a classmate struggling on an assignment — this class has compassion and love. It has been a blessing to witness.”
The four valedictorians this year are Mohamed Bullo, computer science major at Boston College; Josiah Liebert, engineering major at Oregon State University; Anthony Nguyen, chemistry major at the University of Portland; and Ruth Tsegaye, commerce major with information technology concentration at the University of Virginia. The salutatorian is Ahemed Bullo, computer science major at Boston University. Ahemed Bullo is one of 1,647 students nationwide to receive a four-year full-ride scholarship through the highly competitive QuestBridge National College Match program.
