BANKS — This year’s theme at St. Francis of Assisi School is “Soar with the Spirit.”

“With God, we are all born to soar,” reads a press release from the school, where the community has been focusing on the theological virtues of faith, hope and love.

Isaiah 40:31 underscores these virtues: “Hope in the Lord will renew their strength, we will soar on eagles’ wings; we will run and not grow weary, walk and not grow faint.”

St. Francis of Assisi also has been implementing STREAM (science, technology, religion, engineering, arts and math) into daily practices. The program was designed by the National Catholic Educational Association based on the STEM and STREAM programs gaining ground in public and private schools nationwide.

St. Francis of Assisi considers the “R” in STREAM the most crucial letter. Not only will students continue to learn and develop in the Catholic tradition by participating in religion class, attending Mass, and celebrating the sacraments, but teachers also have been integrating STREAM into the science standards.

The STREAM alignment allows the Catholic identity to become manifest in the curriculum in new ways.

School leaders said the community is excited to be partnering with Mad Science for the open house Jan. 26. Mad Science will present a fire and ice show at 1 p.m. All are welcome to join and celebrate Catholic Schools Week.
