EUGENE — Each year the St. Thomas More Newman Center here awards college scholarships. This year it will be offering $28,500 in financial assistance to students active in the center. The application deadline is March 1; the GPA requirement is 2.75.

The scholarships will be presented at the annual Webfoot Gala, this year Friday, April 24, at the Ford Alumni Center on the University of Oregon campus.

Established about 40 years ago, the Ron Brandt Scholarships are named for a young man who took his life while at UO many years ago. Neither Brandt nor his mother, who created the scholarship, were Catholic. But Sister Janet Ryan, then at Newman, offered the mother spiritual guidance during that time.

The Brandt scholarships will provide one $10,000, one $5,000 and two $2,500 awards for students attending UO.

The Len and Margaret Casanova Scholarship — $8,000 to students attending UO — was created by Margaret Casanova. Her husband, Len Casanova, was a successful football coach at the university.

The Bernie Conklin Scholarship ($500) is awarded to a Lane Community College student. Conklin was a beloved member of the Catholic community in Eugene; an estimated 1,000 people attended his funeral. He served as development director at Newman from 2014 until his death in 2016. Conklin played football at both Lane Community College and UO.
