MILWAUKIE — Encouraged by Spanish teacher Lisa Moran and other faculty, Spanish II students at La Salle Prep collected enough toiletries, socks and handwarmers this fall to make more than 100 care kits. The kits will be distributed to people in need through the St. Vincent de Paul chapter at St. Rita Parish in Northeast Portland.

Moran said the drive helps students learn Spanish words for daily rou-tines, such as washing hair — lavarse el pelo.

Students also get to practice compassion, which feels the same in any language.

"I tell them, 'Everybody is entitled to dignity,’” Moran said, “’and one of the ways we maintain our dignity is we stay clean.’”
