SPRINGFIELD — St. Alice parishioners Mary Kay Ankney and Yvonne Kleppe gave Dora Salgado, volunteer coordinator for St. Alice's Homeschool Support program, 14 handmade quilts for children on Dec. 15.

Ankney said quilters often purchase fabric at reduced prices from estate sales or garage sales. They also sell quilts and use the profits to purchase additional material to make quilts for local students.

Each quilt — 40 by 60 inches — is different. Some require intricate stitching; all are made with love.

Ankney said the quilters focused on making quilts for homeschool children after she learned that some students don't perform well in school due lack of sleep from tossing and turning while trying to stay warm during winter.
