The birthday of Catholic social justice advocate and minister to the homeless Dorothy Day is Nov. 8. The University of Portland’s Garaventa Center for Catholic Intellectual Life & American Culture and the college’s social work department marks the occasion with a talk set for 7:15 p.m. that evening in room 120 of Franz Hall. Speaker will be Beth Burns, executive director of P:ear Portland, which mentors young people who have been homeless. The work is in line with the thoughts and life of Day, whose cause for sainthood is being considered by the Vatican. Day died in 1980 at age 83.
