SHERWOOD — At St. Francis School here, middle school students are keeping up to date with ST(R)EAM — or science, technology, religion, engineering, art and math — standards through their creativity with distance learning.

This year, the eighth grade class had the opportunity to visualize the components that make up an atom: its protons, neutrons and electrons. The students were in charge of making 3D atom models to show their elements’ subatomic particles using materials found at home. Materials used included rice, beads, paper plates, candy pieces and small rubber bands.

Eighth graders had fun with their science project and successfully created a model of their element.
