BEAVERTON — St. Cecilia Church here will no longer use individual kneelers as part of the Communion line. In a letter to parishioners in English and Spanish, Father Mike Walker explained that the kneelers don’t function well with the other parts of liturgy.

“They hinder processions, it is awkward to stretch over the kneelers to give Communion to those who are standing, the current setup is not designed for individual kneelers, and it implies that kneeling is the expected norm,” Father Walker wrote.

Father Walker said that when the General Instruction of the Roman Missal was revised in 2000, it was clear that the norm is to receive Communion standing, though the faithful who wish to kneel could do so.
